Dead or alive began, as most of my projects, as a collection over the years of pictures that had a magical quality. Artefacts and totems, things which appeared to have a life of their own - things which were on the edge of life and death. Photography has the ability to freeze things - to make them appear to be dead or things that are dead to appear alive. This juxtaposition, this game of life, is one which we all have to play and which we all lose. The photos are also juxtaposed. I wanted to free them of their immediate meaning by placing them next to another which would produce a meaning "between" the two. |
